The Brewers Assocation released their mid-year statistics on the craft beer industry in the United States this week, and a new benchmark was reached: probably sometime in June, for the first time since the 19th century, 3,000 breweries were operating in the U.S. It’s a remarkable bounceback for an industry that had less than a hundred breweries just three decades ago. And the growth has been especially notable recently; taking closures into account, nearly half of the nation’s breweries have opened just since 2010, and that growth becomes more rapid year after year. To many in the industry — the Brewers Assocation included — it’s cause for celebration.
